Say Bye To Balayage — Nordic White Hair Color Is The Latest Insta Trend For Blondes

The phrase “summer hair” typically evokes visions of warm shades, sun-kissed highlights, and beachy waves. But as warmer weather approaches, an unexpected trend is cropping up on Instagram: winter-white hair color. Think Khaleesi from Game of Thrones or Elsa from Frozen. Labeled Nordic white hair, the super-platinum shade gives off major ice princess vibes. And while it isn't exactly what we would immediately think of for summer 2019, it's a stunning look nonetheless.

Striking, right? Massachusetts-based colorist Daniel Tetreault (@HairLikeaBoss on Instagram) posted the photo of a client whose long locks recently received the Nordic white treatment before speaking to Allure about the process. Heads up: It's definitely not for low-maintenance gals. The trick is lightening the hair to a cool-toned, almost-blue white, and getting to this point can take a lot of prep and maintenance.

“Creating platinum-white hair takes patience and consistency — these results are done in five- to eight-hour sessions, depending on the client's starting point and the condition of their hair,” he said. “When I teach classes I always preach: Go low and slow.” It's also important to assess your hair type and lifestyle before taking the plunge — if you're not up to the constant maintenance that the color requires, it might not be the best idea.

That said, it's crucial to maintain this level of care even after you leave the salon. To keep stark white hair looking its best, hairstylists suggest getting touched up every four to six weeks. At-home, using purple-toned shampoo and conditioner will help neutralize the brassiness while deep conditioning masks will work to fix damage done during the color process.
