Every year, during the month of June, we come together to celebrate Pride. In a series of nationwide events, people take to the streets to support members of the LGBTQ+ community while calling attention to the prejudiced policies that are still in place, nearly 50 years after the first marches were held in New York City, and the increasing violence against these communities.
However, attend a protest today, which we hope you will, and you may mistake it for an awesome dance party. With rainbow-inspired apparel, body paint, wigs, and makeup, these street fairs and festivities are anything but dispiriting. Pride is all about identity, visibility, and creative expression.
According to Pinterest, searches for “pride makeup” — think glittery eyelids and gradient lips — have been up 1,600 percent since April, which comes as no surprise really. Makeup has become an outlet of self-expression and empowerment for all genders, as well as those who are gender-nonconforming.
Earlier this week, we brought you rainbow brows, and with Pride parades kicking off in more than a dozen major cities this weekend, we wanted to bring you another inspired look we love. Of course, there is no wrong way to show your support, whether you’re a member or an ally, but if you’re looking for a way to be a little more outspoken with your makeup, check out the rainbow lip tutorial above.
