Just as you switch out your wardrobe from summer to fall, you should do the same with many of the products you rely on to keep your skin healthy and hydrated, namely your moisturizer. “The fall air is cooler and drier, so our skin needs more hydration to continue to glow,” explains Anna Guanche, MD, a dermatologist at Bella Skin Institute. Cranking up the heat also causes the air inside to become drier, making skin thirsty for moisture, she adds.
When upgrading your moisturizer, it’s important to seek out humectant ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which help the skin retain moisture, as well as replenishing ones likes caprylic/capric triglyceride. A bonus, says Dr. Guanche: “If you can find a moisturizer with mild exfoliating ingredients, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, urea, salicylic acid or willow bark. These will help smooth and brighten skin and lighten the brown marks from your summer rendezvous.”
To help ensure your skin is perfectly prepped for the cooler weather ahead, we asked top dermatologists to share the best moisturizers for fall. Trust them, your skin will thank you.
Any age group can benefit from this pricey yet effective moisturizer. “It’s a rich cream that reduces the signs of aging and has powerful hydration properties,” says Dr. Guanche. This makes it ideal for the abrupt changes in weather that the new season brings.
Dendy Engelman, MD, a dermatologist at Manhattan Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery in NYC, recommends this all-in-one, age-defying moisturizer to patients of all ages and skin types. Its secret ingredient is prebiotics, which help promote healthy skin from the outside in.
Dr. Engelman also loves this moisturizer, which has more of a gel-like consistency, because it contains five types of hyaluronic acid to keep the skin hydrated and plumped throughout the day, no matter what the weather brings. It’s especially great for those with oily skin, as it allows your skin to breathe more than a heavier cream.
Olga Lorencin, celebrity esthetician and founder of Olga Lorencin Transformative Skin Care, loves this hyaluronic acid moisturizer because it feels weightless on the skin’s surface while hydrating deep down. It’s also great for layering with other products, she adds.
Melissa Kanchanapoomi Levin, MD, a dermatologist in NYC and founder of Entiere Dermatology, recommends this soothing lotion, especially for acne-prone skin, since it's non-comedogenic, non-irritating, and pH balanced. “Moisturizing the skin is an important part of caring for and treating acne, so I always recommend moisturizing twice daily while treating with over the counter or prescription medications,” she says.
Lorecin has been using this salve to hydrate skin for years. “It’s very rich and on the heavier side, but absolutely great for someone who’s super-dry,” she says. “I love to mix it with moisturizer for more protection from the elements.” The ingredients (all honey-based) are also ideal for treating burns, cuts, and scrapes!
This is one of Dr. Levin’s favorite creams since it is full of ceramides, which help the skin maintain a healthy moisture barrier. “I explain to my patients that you want to think of your skin as bricks and mortar,” she says. “Your skin cells are the bricks and ceramides are the mortar. ”
