How The Ancient Practice Of Jade Rolling Made Its Way Into Today’s Skincare Routines

More popular than ever, it seems like you can’t scroll through Instagram without seeing someone jade rolling their face. But this is one buzzy beauty trend that isn’t just about a good social media moment; the ancient practice delivers some big-time benefits. The idea, which comes from centuries-old Traditional Chinese Medicine, is that rolling the semi-precious gemstone over your skin helps to detoxify, promotes lymphatic drainage, revs up circulation, and improves elasticity. Here, the lowdown on the roll-down.
There are energetic benefits… and cosmetic benefits, too
The same energetic healing benefits of crystals apply, whether you have them sitting on a windowsill or are rolling them across your face. Jade specifically eliminates negativity and promotes good luck. And while it may most often be referred to as jade rolling, many face rollers are also made of rose quartz, a crystal that promotes feelings of love and self-esteem.
But even if all the energy stuff is too New Age-y for you, the beauty benefits are the real deal. “Rolling instantly reduces inflammation, boosts circulation, and promotes lymphatic drainage to get rid of toxins,” explains beauty expert and author of Lazy Perfection: The Art of Looking Great Without Really Trying, Jenny Patinkin. Translation: Less puffy, more glowy skin in, quite literally, seconds.
While those benefits may not be long-term, the nice thing is you’ll get them even if you’re not super consistent about rolling on the reg. In other words, you don’t need to do it every day to see results. Still, keep in mind that there are a few things jade rolling can’t do — namely make your pores smaller or help improve the penetration of any topical products, notes Patinkin, who cautions that there is lots of misinformation out there about the benefits.
Here’s how to do it
To reap said benefits, the actual rolling part is really quite simple. “Starting at the jawline, roll upwards, moving towards your temples,” advises Patinkin. “This gets all the toxins moving towards the lymphatic drainage points so that they flush out of your face, rather than remain there.” She suggests anywhere from four to 12 passes around your jawline, and the same around your cheekbones and under your eyes. Don’t forget your neck, too, but here you should roll downwards, toward your collarbones (for those same lymphatic drainage purposes).
Be gentle. “While there is some overlap in terms of benefits, don’t mistake jade rolling for facial massage,” points out Patinkin. “You don’t need to use any pressure at all, since the lymphatic system is located very close to the surface of the skin.” Feel free to apply an oil or serum pre-rolling if you want (though there’s no need), and you can also stash your roller in the fridge to make the whole process extra refreshing and invigorating. Roll whenever you want, as often as you want since it’s not something you need to keep up regularly to see any results.
Keep in mind that not all rollers are created equal
They may be called jade rollers, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re made of actual jade. There are only two real types of jade, jadeite and nephrite, notes Patinkin. Many of the rollers out there are made of a variation of marble or a stone called agate; while you’ll reap the same cosmetic benefits no matter the material, the energetic benefits won’t be the same, she adds. So, if that’s what you’re after, it’s worth paying close attention and looking past the name of the product.
