All hail Iskra Lawrence. The 28-year-old Aerie model has long been a figure in the body positive movement, and she is now inspiring women in a whole new way. Lawrence recently took to her Instagram to proudly show off her cellulite in a bright pink swimsuit, including the hashtag #CelluLIT (clever, right?). Thousands of others have since joined in on her mission to celebrate their cellulite, and the result is so incredibly powerful.
"Oh hey #celluLIT…Today and everyday I’m sharing my AerieREALism!" Lawrence began her caption. "To me that’s getting to such a comfortable place with myself that I don’t care what anyone thinks of me...Life’s so much easier when you live it for YOU, Not for someone else’s beauty ideal, someone else’s validation, or a socially constructed perfection. Being you and doing you is always enough."
The model also shared that she's currently on day six of a "no makeup challenge," further proving her dedication to embracing the skin she's in. The post ended with Lawrence encouraging others to post photos of themselves loving their bodies, cellulite and all. There are now nearly 18,600 posts with the hashtag #CelluLIT, all from people sharing their own unique journeys with confidence.
One user detailed her years of trying to cover up and smooth her cellulite, only to come to terms with it. "The truth is, nothing will smooth my stems, and that's okay," she writes. "No mark, scar, lump, or bump will ever get me to cover up again. So here they are, in their cell-u-lit glory, my pale thunder thighs are stepping out for the season."
It's estimated that cellulite affects up to 95 percent of women, regardless of shape or size, and the lumps and bumps occur due to basic anatomy and hormones. While there are way you can improve the appearance of cellulite, albeit temporarily, dimpled skin is nothing to be ashamed of.
One user called out the fact that cellulite is normal and often has nothing to do with weight. "I lost 100 pounds and got cellulite! IT'S NORMAL!" she wrote alongside a mirror selfie showing off her thigh dimples.
Another reminded us of an ever-important message: "Swimsuit season is here and I wanted to remind ya’ll that every body is beautiful and perfect in their own ways," she wrote.
Hats off to these beautiful ladies and to Lawrence for continuing the important conversation of self-love and acceptance. #CelluLIT
