Whether she’s walking a red carpet, hosting a TV show or clapping back at someone on social media, Chrissy Teigen seems to exude confidence. But the 33-year-old star says that, like everyone, she has her share of self-doubts. “I have just as many insecurities as anybody else, if not more,” she said in an interview with Popsugar. “I really wouldn’t even describe myself as a superconfident person.”
In recent years, Teigen has revealed that she struggled with postpartum depression and body insecurities after giving birth. But the former swimsuit model is finding happiness in her new roles, including being a mom to her two kids, Luna and Miles, and co-hosting an upcoming cooking show with celebrity chef David Chang. When Popsugar asked Teigen what powers her newfound confidence, her response was simple: age.
“I think just getting older, honestly. I used to be very much a ‘yes’ person; always wanting to make other people happy and not necessarily putting my own needs and desires first,” she said. “I’ve been through different stages in my life — different types of work, different agencies, had different teams — and I think as you just get older, you gain confidence and realize that there are certain things that are important to you, and you’re not afraid to speak up on them anymore.”
Tegien goes onto explain that instead of doing things to please other people, she is focused on family life and doing things she thinks are “going to be great.” For example, the her upcoming cooking show with Chang on Hulu, tentatively called Family Style, will feature family meals and recipes passed down through generations — her mom is even said to appear on a few episodes.
She also credits her success to her support group. “I’d say you have to really surround yourself with good people. I think there’s so much more to be said about the quality of friendships you have around you than the quantity of,” she told the publication. “It’s really about being around the right people and wanting those people to challenge you; not [having] people pleasers and ‘yes’ people around you. But having people — honest, good people — who you respect for what they do and the way they live their lives.”
That’s pretty solid advice, as studies show that you are indeed influenced by the people around you. Teigen’s inner circle includes husband John Legend, who has said he fell in love with how “engaging and witty and funny” she is, and best friend Jen Atkin, a super-successful entrepreneur and celebrity hairstylist. “There are some friends that need more from you. But I think with us, we respect each other’s work, and it’s just so nice to wind down and do nothing,” Teigen said of her “close” friendship with Atkin.
