Whether it be about her mental health issues, struggles with addiction or past eating disorder, Demi Lovato is known for keeping it real with fans. On Thursday, the 27-year-old singer posted an unedited photo of herself in a bikini, showing her looking over her shoulder with her booty on full display. “It’s CELLULIT,” she writes in the caption.
But this type of confidence didn’t come easy. In the caption, Lovato opens up about how difficult it was to actually post the pic. The photo represents her “biggest fear,” she says. Though she looks absolutely amazing, of course, her hesitance is understandable. So many images on Instagram are edited and filtered to hide imperfections like cellulite.
“This is my biggest fear. A photo of me in a bikini unedited,” she explains in the caption. “I’m just literally sooooo tired of being ashamed of my body, editing it (yes the other bikini pics were edited—and I hate that I did that but it’s the truth) so that others think I’m THEIR idea of what beautiful is, but it’s just not me. This is what I got.”
Lovato goes on to explain that she wants the next chapter in her life to be more authentic, saying she is done “try to meet someone else’s standards.” She tells her followers that she feels great and is happy to be back at work (an anthem is coming!!) without a “strenuous workout schedule or on “on some crazy diet shit.”
“So here’s me, unashamed, unafraid and proud to own a body that has fought through so much and will continue to amaze me when I hopefully give birth one day,” she continues.
“Just so everyone’s clear.. I’m not stoked on my appearance BUT I am appreciative of it and sometimes that’s the best I can do,” Lovato finishes the post, and honestly, who can’t relate to that? “I hope to inspire someone to appreciate their body today too,” she says.
Since posting the picture she has gotten a ton of praise from fans and fellow celebrities, including Amy Schumer, Hailey Bieber, and Ashley Graham, just to name a few. “Showing us YOU is so incredibly beautiful,” Graham commented.
Her new manager Scooter Braun also commented: “YOU did this. YOU. YOU are amazing…YOU are smart…you are beautiful… you are wonderful… you are brave…and you are kind. And I’m proud of YOU. Hell Im proud to know YOU! Bravo for loving YOU first and in turn inspiring millions.”
Lovato is no doubt an inspiration to many, and this post, which now has nearly 7 million likes, is just the latest example of why. Here’s to hoping more influential women shed the standards.
