If there’s one thing people know about Game of Thrones (and really, any HBO show) it’s that there’s a lot of sex and none of it is censored. Considering sex is a normal part of most of our everyday lives, you wouldn’t think a little of it on TV would be that big of a deal. But, according to actress Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen on the show, not everyone has such a mature attitude when it comes to adult scenes.
She told Harper’s Bazaar: “I’m starting to get really annoyed about this stuff now because people say, ‘Oh, yeah, all the porn sites went down when Game of Thrones came back on.’ I’m like, The Handmaid’s Tale? I f***ing love that show, and I cried when it ended because I couldn’t handle not seeing it. That is all sex and nudity. There are so many shows centered around this very true fact that people reproduce. People f*** for pleasure—it’s part of life.”
Boom. And she’s totally right. If the primary reason you’re watching the show is to see the characters have sex, well, that’s kind of weird. If you’re watching for other reasons, like, say, plot, character development, etc., then maybe consider talking about those things instead. It’s also worth noting that male actors are rarely asked to comment on nude scenes they’ve starred in, while female actresses who choose to bare it all on screen are asked about it constantly.
It’s not the first time Clarke has expressed this opinion. In an essay for the Huffington Post earlier this year, she writes: “If you’ve watched Game of Thrones then, spoiler, you will have seen me in the nude. There are plenty of ways in which people want me to respond to questions about this fact. And plenty of reasons why I do not feel the need to justify myself.”
