October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Jennifer Garner is spreading an important message through social media. The 47-year-old actress shared an Instagram video of herself at her annual mammogram appointment to encourage her followers to get checked themselves.
In the clip, Garner takes followers through the entire routine: waiting to see her doctor (she passes the time by blowing a latex glove balloon and doodling cartoon boobs), changing into hospital top so she can get checked, and the procedure itself. The whole thing is set to lighthearted music, implying that the process is quick and easy.
"Every October I have a standing date 🙂. For a mammogram 😬," Garner wrote in the caption. "For me, having the appointment on the books makes it routine, like the dentist. I know it’s scary, sisters, but just do it—the next best thing to an all clear is early detection."
She also revealed the results of her mammogram on camera.
She also sent a heartfelt message to those suffering from breast cancer: "To everyone in the thick of the battle—respect and love and strength to you."
Garner's friends and followers are commending her for her post. Actress Olivia Munn commented, "You are a g darn treasure." Rachel Zoe wrote that she gets checked twice a year, adding: "I love you even more for this post on behalf of myself my sister and my mom."
According to the American Cancer Society, women should begin getting annual mammograms at age 45, though they may choose to start screenings at age 40. However, it's important that women of all ages be aware of the signs of breast cancer, and perform regular breast checks on themselves. You can find more information about self-checks here.
