Jennifer Garner Opens Up About Being Named People’s Most Beautiful Person: ‘This Is So Embarrassing’
Actress, producer, activist. Jennifer Garner now has a new title to add to that list: The 47-year-old star was named People’s Most Beautiful Person of the year, gorgeously gracing the cover of the current issue. Of course, she’s a natural beauty, wearing what appears to be very little makeup, but it’s her work with Save the Children and dedication to her own kids the magazine says is what makes her so deserving of the accolade.
Earlier this week, Garner stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show to discuss the title, which she admits was a shock. “This is so embarrassing, I mean seriously,” she said. “I have never been more nervous than I am today. I guess I just thought you guys would boo. Like, you guys are expecting Kaia Gerber, and it’s me. And I feel like bolting. I feel like I should go, you know what I mean? Because it’s so ridiculous. It’s silly, but it’s nice.”
“You’re a beautiful person inside and out,” DeGeneres reassured her. And a lot people seem to agree. “Inside and out! Great choice People,” wrote one fan on Instagram. Added another: “She is amazing! Down to earth and humble. Great choice for the cover People.”
In the cover story for People, Garner explains that she never felt like “one of the pretty girls,” but that it didn’t stop her from feeling confident in her “bank geek chic” style. “I just bypassed insecurity and didn’t see myself as attractive at all. It was not part of my life,” she said. “I felt good about myself back then!”
A lot of this she credits to her family: “Looks weren’t a big deal in my family. I don’t think my parents ever said, ‘You’re pretty,’ and so we just didn’t think about it.” It was until college that she recalls someone calling her beautiful for the first time.
Now, the mom-of-three is focusing on the beauty of motherhood. “They just want me to look like mom,” she said, referring to her children. Her wardrobe consists mostly of workout clothes, jeans, and sneakers. As for makeup? “Do I look like someone who’s good at applying makeup,” she quipped.
“I’m starting to get to the point where I realize this job is not going to be forever,” she told the magazine. “I feel like I'm happier and feel prettier the less I look in the mirror, and the more I am thinking about my impact outside.”
