Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been on Instagram for a month now, and while everyone awaits the announcement of the birth of the royal baby, they continue to post outtakes from their social work and the charities they support. Still, they're managing to keep followers on their toes, especially with their most recent move -- an unfollowing spree at midnight. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex decreased their already short following list from 23 to 16, even unfollowing Prince William and Kate Middleton's account.
It's not what you think, though. The couple announced that because May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the U.S. and May 13 marks the start of Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK, to highlight the cause, they would be following select organizations that support mental health and well-being.
Markle and Prince Harry said in an Instagram post that this month they would "pay tribute to all of the incredible work people across the globe are doing in this space." Some of these accounts include Heads Together (the royals’ mental health initiative), Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation, Talkspace, The Kind Campaign, Jameela Jamil's I Weigh community, and Oprah Winfrey‘s SuperSoul Sunday talk show.
Their post continues: "There are countless organisations doing amazing work for mental health - please consider the accounts we’ve highlighted as a small snapshot of this global support network. We are all in this together. We invite you to explore the extraordinary stories of strength, and the commitment to kindness as seen in the above accounts."
The royals also mentioned that they would be changing the accounts they follow monthly, based on a different theme or cause that is dear to them. This is the first time such a social strategy has been used by members of the royal family, proving that Duke and Duchess of Sussex are not afraid to do things a little differently, and it's certainly welcomed.
Though fans are anxiously anticipating the arrival of the royal baby, they're also appreciative of Markle and Prince Harry's commitment to doing good. "Thank you for shedding light on a health issue that is often overlooked," one follower wrote. "Your awareness will have a profound impact globally! You guys are doing an excellent job!!!"
