To say that Priyanka Chopra had a big year is putting it lightly. After just five months of being engaged, the 36-year-old star married Nick Jonas in one of the most publicized celebrity weddings in recent years. That’s not a lot of time to plan a wedding, especially considering she runs her own production company, is a global actress, and a UNICEF ambassador.
In her August cover story for Elle UK, Chopra opened up about the whirlwind process of planning her big day. “We decided on the venue for our wedding in October and we got married on 1 December. We had one-and-a-half months to plan, so we were just like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, let’s get it.’ And suddenly we were like, ‘Ohhh god,'” she told the magazine. “It was very extravagant. Hopefully, you just do it once. So it’s fine.”
The wedding certainly was extravagant, with multiple ceremonies over three days honoring the pair’s respective backgrounds. The celebrations were held at at the Umaid Bhawan Palace, a royal palace with a five-star hotel in Chopra’s native India. The events began at the Mumbai home of Chopra’s mother, Dr. Madhu Chopra, then ended in Jodhpur, where Christian and traditional Indian ceremonies were held. It’s said that 250 guests attended and that the party rivaled popular music festivals.
Chopra also reflects on how after the dust settled, she’s adjusting to married life. “It’s so different,” she said. “I’d never realized having a husband and a boyfriend are such different things. When you say your vows, it’s like, this person is my family, and it’s the family I chose. There’s a weird responsibility to them. And a safety that comes from it. We are learning about each other every day.”
Sadly, Chopra still catches slack about the whirlwind relationship and the age gap between her and Jonas, with some outlets going as far as to call her a “global scam artist.” At the end of the day, though, she doesn’t seem to let the negativity phase her. “Destiny has a weird way of helping you to find your calling,” she concluded.
