Shay Mitchell just celebrated the birth of her daughter, and she’s already dealing with nasty mom-shaming online. After sharing a video of herself and boyfriend Matte Babel dancing at Drake’s birthday party, trolls went to the 31-year-old star’s Instagram feed to shame her for going out three days after the couple made their birth announcement.
The photo, which was shared on October 20th, shows the Pretty Little Liars actress holding the tiny hand of her newborn daughter with the caption “Never letting go…”. Though the clips from Drake’s party were posted on her Stories, haters went straight to this post to share their opinions on it. “….Except when there’s a party to go to, right?!” one follower wrote. Others called her selfish.
But Mitchell was quick to clarify that even though she shared the news of her daughter’s birth on that day, it doesn’t mean she was born that day. “Disgusting… leaving your newborn only days after birth,” another Instagram user wrote, to which Mitchell fired back: “Days? Lol honey, just because I posted on that day doesn’t mean she was born on that day.” The new mom has yet to reveal her daughter’s birthday.
Mitchell later took to her Story to respond to the criticism. “Apparently people are really upset that I left three days after having a kid to go out and party,” she said in a video while scrolling through the comments on her post. “It wasn’t three days and I left her with Angel so…” she said, referring to her dog as a joke.
Fans joined in to defend Mitchell, too, saying that just because she’s a new mom doesn’t mean her entire life has to be put on hold. “Seriously, stop with the mom-shaming,” one user commented. “So she gave birth recently…doesn’t mean her life suddenly became prohibited and that she’s restricted to do certain things.”
“Mind your business and stop mom shaming,” said another. Them ’em, girl!
Mitchell certainly isn’t the first celebrity to be targeted by mom shaming, and unfortunately, she will likely continue to face criticism as she navigates motherhood, especially since she’s been so open on social media. The actress’ YouTube series, Almost Ready, documented her pregnancy and birth, as well as shared details of her prior miscarriage with Babel.
“This is definitely the most intense experience of my life. Matte and I are parents, and I can’t believe it and we thought pregnancy was a journey,” she said in her most recent episode, which took viewers through her 33 hour labor. “I’m realizing we have just begun.”
