The murder of Gianni Versace, one of the top names in fashion, shocked the world. The Italian designer was gunned down outside his luxurious home in Miami Beach in 1997. Following the success of season one American Crime Story:The People v. O.J. Simpson, FX decided to focus season two on the events surrounding Versace’s death. American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace is one of the most highly anticipated show of 2018, set to air January 17.
This season’s story will follow the murder of Versace (played by Edgar Ramirez) while highlighting his assassin, serial killer Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss). In the trailer released Wednesday, Criss says, “this particular manhunt is the largest failed FBI manhunt in history.” Ramirez adds, “We’re going to understand how that could’ve been avoided.”
The show promises to dive deeper into the events leading up to the murder and what went wrong in the investigation, much like season one did with the O.J. Simpson case. “For every season of American Crime Story, what we’re interested in is what makes this an American crime? A crime America is guilty of, not just the characters, we’re exploring,” said Nina Jacobson executive producer.
