Season 2 of The Handmaid's Tale, Hulu's adaptation of author Margaret Atwood's haunting glimpse into a feminist dystopia, will return in April 2018 (start planning your all-girls viewing party now). In the meantime, they've dropped a teaser trailer with a decidedly ominous tone. Very dark and ominous, but unfortunately without much insight into what to expect from the upcoming season.
A synopsis for the new season, provided by Hulu, gives some context: "The Emmy-winning drama series returns with a second season shaped by Offred's pregnancy and her ongoing fight to free her future child from the dystopian horrors of Gilead. 'Gilead is within you' is a favorite saying of Aunt Lydia. In season 2, Offred and all our characters will fight against–or succumb to–this dark truth."
The show stars Elisabeth Moss, Alexis Bledel, and Samira Wiley (who recently told Glam of the new season: “We’re gonna go to some dark places, but we’re also gonna find some light in there, as well") as "handmaids", fertile women forced to live as slaves in order to produce children for a patriarchal ruling class. Bledel has been promoted to a series regular and Clea Duvall is set to join the cast as Bledel's wife, Sylvia.
Six months may seem like a long time to wait to return to Gilead, but until then, just remember: "nolite te bastardes carborundorum."
