5 Styles to Avoid If You Want to Look Younger

When it comes to style, age is trivial. We often look to icons like Helen Mirren, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Iris Apfel for lessons in fashion. But one thing we can all agree on is that looking older than you actually are is rarely a good thing. Unfortunately, many women still make style choices that add years to their appearance. Avoiding fast styles is like drinking from the fountain of youth. Want a sip? Keep reading…

Decked-out denim

While super low-rise, acid wash, super-stretchy, or rhinestone studded jeans are choices that should be avoided, that doesn’t mean you are limited to mom jeans.  If you are looking for jeans with flare, go for decently deconstructed or trendy fringe styles instead. You can also never go wrong with a well-tailored, wide-legged look.

Sky-high heels

Heels that are too high or platforms that are too chunky give that “trying too hard” look, which in turn makes you look older. Capping out at 4 inches is usually a safe bet.

Fast fashion

There is nothing wrong with a little fast fashion, but the older you are, the less you should indulge. These items are often made with a younger crowd in mind, meaning the cuts may not be flattering on a grown woman’s body and the fabrics may not be lasting quality. A good rule of thumb: Forever 21 is for ages 18 and under, H&M is for ages 29 and younger, and Zara, well, Zara is always a good idea.

Dressing too sexy

Yes, you can be sexy without baring it all. Women who expose too much tend to look older than they actually are. Choose to emphasize one flattering area of your body at a time. Think skirts that hit the slimmest area of your leg, v-neck tops and blouses, and wrap dresses that emphasize your waistline. Leave a little to the imagination.

Outdated looks

There is a difference between retro and dated. While there is nothing wrong with wearing older styles or items from past seasons, try give them a modern twist. Mix an ’80s blazer with a cropped pant from today. If you are wearing a shapeless suit that you’ve owned for decades, you risk looking decades older.
