Whether it’s a basic t-shirt and skinny jeans or a button-down and slacks, there’s nothing quite as clean and classic as wearing white. The hue goes with everything and, best of all, it lets you stand out more so than the clothes you are wearing. So why, in addition to mourning the end of poolside parties and backyard barbecues, do we say goodbye to wearing white until Memorial Day?

Happily, more fashion influencers are starting to ignore the traditional style expiration date and are embracing white year-round. Consider this your permission: “The only rule in this generation when it comes to fashion is that there are none,” says stylist and designer Mickey Freeman. But to keep your white wardrobe seasonally appropriate, he recommends choosing pieces in different textures, such as chunky knits and silk, and finishing the look with a seasonal staple like over-the-knee boots. Keep scrolling for more stylist-approved ways to wear white after Labor Day.

A White T-Shirt

“A slouchy and relaxed white tee creates the perfect blank canvas for an amazing statement piece, like a cool leather jacket or bold necklace,” says Freeman.

A White Button-Up

One of the most versatile items of clothing you own, the white button-up not only looks great on everyone, but it can also be dressed up for the office or worn casually on the weekend. “Tuck it into jeans, a skirt, or even yoga pants,” suggests celebrity stylist Ali Levine.

White Pumps

Yes, you read right. According to celebrity stylist Sam Russell, white pumps can be worn through winter. “Those that get a pass, though, are more of the decorated and detailed variety,” he says. Spring for a pair with textured embellishments like pearls and studs, and pair them with jeans and fitted sweaters (think Erika Jayne from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills).

White Slacks

We tend to reach for our black trousers this time of year, but Levine recommends investing in a stylish shade of winter white. Try a pair of wide-leg culottes, which are both comfortable and universally flattering, with a fitted top to accentuate your waist. Or, go for a well-tailored crop pant and printed blouse for graphic impact.

White Furry Footwear

Recently spotted on It-girls like Gigi Hadid and Rihanna, the fluffy footwear trend is proving its longevity. “The next generation is more approachable with fur embellishments like toe toppers and trimmings as seen on this season’s chunky heel,” says Russell. “If you can visualize yourself pairing these with deconstructed denim, a savvy print, and large hat, then your imagination is serving you well.”

White Fringe

Heads up for party season: Jazz up your look with a touch of fringe. Hemlines, sleeves and collars with fringe detail provide playful appeal. “I love a flapper-inspired dress,” says Russel. “It entertains itself!” He recommends pairing a white fringe dress with a dark motorcycle jacket or boots for cool contrast.
