winter athleisure 2020

If you’re like most people, you’ve probably worn leggings, sweatpants, and hoodies far more over the last calendar year than ever before. We are living through a pandemic, after all, with much of the country's population working and/or learning from home. So, if there was ever a time to rock casual, comfortable clothes all day, it’s now. No judgement.

Also in your favor is the fact that athleisure, the clothing category that marries exercise and everyday wear, has been trending for a few years. “The trend is flexible and gives us the opportunity to dress up or down," says celebrity stylist Soneca Guadara. "You can easily transition from your virtual yoga class to your morning Zoom call with clients while still looking professional and remaining comfortable."

With winter approaching, Guadara recommends stocking up on stylish athleisure you can cozy up in at home *and* pair with seasonal staples like sweaters or coats when you venture outside. “Winter is all about layering, so think about adding a leather jacket over your hooded sweatshirt for a cool and edgy look or a padded vest over your favorite knit," she says.

Ready to up your sweatpants game this season? Here are the winter athleisure staples you’ll want to live in over the next few months.

winter athleisure

Women's UA ColdGear Authentic Mock ($50; underarmour.com)

Whether you’re going for a run or heading to your friend's house for football Sunday, this is the kind of mock turtleneck you’ll be comfortable wearing. It’s made from a sweat-wicking material that dries quickly and has a four-way stretch construction that allows for movement in any direction. Layer under a puffer or sweater vest when you aren't working out.

winter athleisure

lululemon Align Super-High Rise Pant 28" ($98; shop.lululemon.com)

The only thing better than leggings these days is high-rise leggings. And if you’ve yet to try on a pair of Align leggings from Lululemon, you are missing out. They're made from the most buttery-soft fabric that holds its shape impeccably well, even after washing them dozens of times. This is one of their newer versions, with a super-high waist that's great for working out or just hanging out.

winter athleisure

Athleta Downtown Vest ($159; athleta.com)

A puffer vest that's both practical and flattering? Found! Semi-fitted, meaning it isn't too constricting, the seams on this vest are curved to hug your waistline. What's more, it's sustainable—made from recycled materials that are water-resistant and resist snags. Of course, the pockets are a nice feature, too!

lulus pullover

Look At Me Now Black Dolman Sleeve Crop Top ($34; lulus.com)

This is the perfect cropped pullover, whether you’re on your way to the gym or to a casual dinner with friends. It has a rounded neckline that’s super flattering and long dolman sleeves with fitted cuffs. The cropped hem sits right above your waist, so it’s perfect for wearing with high-waisted jeans or leggings.

winter athleisure

Nike Sportswear Long Zip Hoodie ($90; nordstrom.com)

Allow us to introduce you to the Snuggie of athleisure. Once zipped inside this fleece-lined cotton hoodie, you'll never want to leave...any why would you?

winter athleisure

Sweaty Betty Base Layer Ski Sweater ($108; nordstrom.com)

Designed for the slopes, this funnel-neck sweater will keep you nice and toasty. And while it's great for layering, with a print this cute, you're going to want to show it off.

winter athleisure

Parajumpers Power Fleece Moegi ($435; parajumpers.it)

If there’s one clothing category that’s worthy of a splurge, it’s without a doubt outerwear. You’re going to get the most wear out of this kind of clothing and deserve for it to be made out of the best type of material possible. This zip-up is made from sherpa fleece and is so soft that it feels like you’re wearing PJs. "Looks good indoors with the fire or outdoors in the woods," reads the website, and we couldn't agree more.

winter athleisure

Lizzie Pink Tie-Dye Drawstring Joggers ($64; lulus.com)

Props to you if you’ve gone through the entire pandemic thus far without buying tie-dye. But the trend isn't going anywhere this winter, and these drawstring joggers are the perfect way to get your feet wet. The comfortable French terry knit cotton is so soft, you'll never want to take them off, and the relaxed, roomy legs are perfect for lounging. Just note that these joggers run a bit large, so size down.

winter athleisure

Lanston Dolman Sleeve Pullover ($106; revolve.com)

With a slightly oversized fit, this super-soft ribbed pullover can be dressed up or down—down with the matching joggers, up with a pair of jeans and booties.

winter athleisure

Soma WKND Essential Fleece Leggings Regular ($69; soma.com)

Talk about staying warm. These leggings are fleece-lined, which gives you dual comfort and warmth all the while providing a flattering fit. We also love the contoured elastic waistband.

winter athleisure

Zella Relaxed Long Sleeve T-Shirt ($45; nordstrom.com)

Two words we look for in a winter top: relaxed fit. With extra-long sleeves and finger holes, it layers as nicely under a leather jacket as it does a trainer jacket.

winter athleisure

Adidas Hooded Track Top ($80; adidas.com)

Tracksuit season is back! (Though did it ever really end?) This fit drapes your body with a slightly-slouchy shape, and the velvety corduroy adds some fun retro flare. Note: The pants are sold separately

winter athleisure

hatattack Cabin Hat ($67; hatattack.com)

Every crisp winter day warrants a beanie that’ll keep your head and ears warm, but bulky beanies can become cumbersome, especially indoors. Not this one. Made of lightweight yet cozy materials, it can be worn cuffed or uncuffed and comes in four seasonal shades.

jcrew cashmere crewneck

Cashmere Crewneck Sweater ($98; jcrew.com)

Whoever said cashmere doesn’t count as athleisure, probably doesn’t own much of it. Even though cashmere goes on nice and light, it keeps you warm, notes Guadara, which makes it perfect for pretty much any activity. This gorgeous cashmere crewneck comes in more than 20 different colors.

winter athleisure

Yoicy Womens Super Thick Wool Socks ($16; amazon.com)

Your feet deserve a little TLC, too—and what better way to treat them right than with premium pure wool socks? These are super soft, keep your feet incredibly warm, and come in pretty much every color in the book.

winter athleisure

Patagonia Radalie Water Repellent Insulated Parka ($199; nordstrom.com)

Thanks to Thermogreen insulation, this parka is incredibly warm without adding bulk. Quilt lines and princess seams create a flattering, streamlined silhouette, and we love the semi-metallic colors it comes in.
