For those of you who begrudgingly adopted the skinny jean movement, you will be pleased to hear that flared styles—from high-waisted to oversized hems—are proving their longevity. For those of you who can’t help but see terrible flashbacks from high school, you’d be surprised at how modern bell bottoms can feel when styled correctly. They are sophisticated, surprisingly flattering, and with the right shoes, can make you look like you have legs for days. Just ask yourself, do you really want to spend your days in basic skinny jeans? Instead, add some flare to your wardrobe with stylist tips.
Get them hemmed
The fringe trend is not a pass for worn and frayed hemlines. Get your flared jeans hemmed so they fall roughly an inch from the ground when you are wearing shoes.
Pair flares with your highest heels
Take this opportunity to break out your tallest chunky heels or clogs—this will give the illusion that you are way taller than you actually are. Not into adding to your height? Go for a pair of pointy toe flats instead, which also provide a long-and-lean illusion.
Wear a form-fitting top
For a classic look, stick with fitted sweaters or tailored button-downs up top. What’s more, this flattering duo will give you shape by emphasizing your waistline.
Or, let it flow
Trying pairing flared jeans with a flowy blouse or relaxed t-shirt. (You can never go wrong with a slouchy white tee and a tough moto jacket.) The key is to add a belt to break up the silhouettes and cinch your waist.
Play with longer layers
A trench coat or long cardigan can enhance the fluidity of the flare’s silhouette.
