If you were a teenager in the early 2000s, you probably remember the exposed thong trend. Jeans were cut so low, it was hard to sit in class without your string underwear rising above. Not to mention the fact that all of your favorite pop stars, including Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Christina Milian, and Gwen Stefani intentionally pulled their g-strings high above the waist of low-slung pants. It was sexy. It was rebellious. It was a sartorial symbol for young girls coming of age.
But whoever said the thong was a thing of the past was sadly mistaken. As with all things fashion, it appears that the exposed thong trend is on its way back. Just last week, while filming a music video in Miami, Jennifer Lopez stepped out wearing a white cropped top, baggy gray trousers, and a matching gray thong hiked high above her naked hip bones and chiseled abdominal V. According to Vogue, the design comes courtesy of Natasha Zinko’s Fall 2018 collection and was pulled together by celebrity stylist Rob Zangardi. It was accessorized with chunky jewelry and hidden heels.
While the look may be a one-off, if anyone can make exposed thongs happen in 2018, it’s definitely J.Lo (sorry Kim, not this time). The 49-year-old mega-star is no stranger to daring fashion statements, and she has the toned body to pull them off. Remember that risqué Versace dress at the 2000 Grammy Awards? Or, for a more recent example, check out the nearly-naked Valentino gown she’s wearing on the 2018 cover of InStyle.
While you won’t catch me rushing to Victoria’s Secret to pick up new panties to flash, as long as Lopez is showing off her curves, I’m all for it. #Goals.
