When it comes to fashion, Naomi Campbell is a formidable force. Yesterday, during Paris Fashion Week, the supermodel made a surprise appearance on the catwalk at Valentino’s couture presentation. Closing the show in a custom black gown with a bodice so sheer you could see her nipples, the 48-year-old showed the world that she’s still got it — and isn’t afraid to flaunt it.
The crowd was soon on its feet cheering.
It’s fitting that the brand’s current creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, would seek out the seasoned model for this custom number. Though this is her first appearance on the label’s runway in 14 years, having last walked in 2005, Campbell has a longstanding history with the fashion house. She has remained close to Valentino Garavani, the namesake of the brand, and is sits front row season after season.
Garavani once told Vogue, “One cannot be more sexy. She imposes her own status of a queen.” One of the five original supermodels, Campbell began modeling in when she was 15 years old. She has appeared on the cover of over 500 magazines and has been the face of couture campaigns for the likes of Versace, Prada, Gucci, and YSL, but the runway was always her domain, as she's famous for her fierce strut.
The living legend has now celebrated over three decades of fashion domination, and though she recently hinted at retirement, it looks like she has no signs of slowing down. Why should she? Campbell is just as gorgeous as ever, and last night she proved, once again, that she belongs on the runway. "Naomi Campbell is still the best in the game. No contest," wrote one fan on Twitter following the show. Another added of the monumental moment, "The one and only Naomi Campbell closed the Valentino Couture show. Over 30 years and still dominating the runway."
