Looking pretty and poised, models on the spring 2014 Fashion Week runways brought pencil skirts back to our attention. The slim style has been a classic for years, a basic, versatile piece that every woman should have in her closet. But these daring designs took the old-school standard to contemporary times. Though the silhouette remained traditional—high-waisted, formfitting, and with the hem hitting midcalf—the details were all about raising the fashion bar. Five designers in particular turned heads with their interpretation of the pencil skirt. Marchesa’s embellished and sheer-panel design, Oscar de la Renta’s bold black-and-white look, Michael Kors’ slit skirt paired with a crop top, Dries Van Noten’s gold-threaded beauty, and Prabal Gurung’s edgy printed version made our list of favorites.
