A Day in the Life of Beauty: Bluemercury Co-founder Marla Malcolm Beck

Publish date:

Glam caught up with Bluemercury Co-founder Marla Malcolm Beck, as she puts the finishing touches on the newest products of her M-61 skincare line, assists brands with the rollout of their Fall 2013 launches, helps her children with their homework, and even beauty blogs on the side! Here she shares her daily schedule:

My morning routine is pretty simple—I use a hydrating serum, like M-61's Hydraboost, followed by Laura Mercier’s Hydrating Foundation Primer and then apply a BB cream. I’m currently loving Trish McEvoy’s new BB cream in Shade 1. The rest of the day’s makeup goes on after that.

Time to walk the kids to school. It’s a nice way to spend some time together before the hustle of the day begins. After dropping them off, I walk into our Bethesda Bluemercury location, fuel up with some coffee and look at the new window displays.

I have a meeting to go over the packaging options for some of our new M-61 products. My input and sign off is involved every step of the way in creating this line, which started with five years of pouring over dermatology journals and naturopathic studies. I am careful to choose only natural, effective ingredients that have extensive research behind them—tamarind, gallic acid, bilberry, red seaweed, soy. It took me more than 175 formulas to get to the right one.

We’re opening a new location in Rye, New York, so I take some time to speak with Bluemercury’s Director of Stores to discuss merchandising. Like with M-61, I ensure I have involvement in the store details.

My afternoon is packed with back-to-back meetings with Caudalie, Molton Brown, and Bumble and Bumble teams. We’re discussing the brands’ plans for the upcoming launches for fall 2013 and planning around them. It’s always an exciting time when new products are launching. The sophistication of the Bluemercury shopper is higher than ever, so we like to keep on top of what’s new and emerging in each category.

I settle in to write a post for Marla’s Beauty Blog on Bluemercury.com. The blog is really about beauty in my life and how I integrate products into my routine. Today I’m discussing two of my favorite Laura Mercier bronzers. I just love a sun-kissed look, especially now that the weather is finally warming up. In the midst of writing, I learn from the planning team that one of these favorites is not launching until the end of June.

I rush home to get started on homework with the kids. This is one constant in my day that I can’t miss. My kids are a great way for me to de-stress at the end of a long, meeting packed day.

Homework with the kids is complete, but I have one more meeting—dinner at The Palm in Washington, D.C. with the President of Skinceuticals.

Even at the end of a jam-packed day, I never skimp on my skincare routine. I always remove my makeup before bed and apply serum, moisturizer, eye cream, etc. I’m also a big believer in exfoliation, so an at-home peel a few times a week is a must! I’m loving M-61’s new Power Glow Peel to ensure a radiant look.

Lights out! Time to recharge and refresh for the following exciting day!
