Androgynous Model Andrej Pejić Lands Role in Sofia Coppola’s ‘Little Mermaid’
We still don’t know who—or if Emma Watson—will star as Ariel in Sofia Coppola’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, but we do have confirmation of a high-profile addition to the cast. Androgynous model Andrej Pejić, known for blurring gender lines from the cover of L’Officielto the catwalk of Jeremy Scott, has been cast as “Sister #4.”
IMDBhas listed Pejić as the one and only star in the fantasy film so far, as one of the title character’s siren sisters. He joins Coppola, whose cult-favorite films include The Virgin Suicides and The Bling Ring, and scribe Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas), who will be updating the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale.
This will be the first silver screen role for Pejić; we’ve previously seen the Bosnian-Australian beauty star in David Bowie’s video for “The Stars (Are Out Tonight),” and in Turkish television show Faith. We’re hoping her casting signals a more adult take on the tale—in contrast to Disney’s happily-ever-after love story—and an allegiance to the darker themes present in the 1837 original. Knowing Coppola, we shouldn’t be disappointed.
No word on a production start or release date for the Universal Pictures project, but according to Deadline, “the intention is to move quickly.”
