I love a good cocktail, but I have no idea what I’m doing when I try to make one at home. What are some tips to keep in mind?
Happy hour is a great time to unwind, but when the bar scene is too packed, a cocktail from the comfort of home is a great option, especially for a girls’ night in. We turned to mixologist Scott Fitzgerald for his expert advice on the craft as well as a mocktail to test your skills.
Keep It Simple, Silly — There’s no need to have a slew of ingredients for a cocktail as it can end up tasting terrible. “[T]he flavors end up fighting over each other and making an awful drink,” he explained. “It's important to remember that the greatest of the classics like the Gimlet, Margarita, Daiquiri, Sour, Old-Fashioned, and Manhattan are all drinks that contain just 3 ingredients. Perfection through simplicity is key.”
Tupperware Can Be A Tool – Yeah, really! A quart-sized plastic container with a lid can serve as a substitute cocktail shaker if you don’t have bar tools on-hand. “I sometimes find myself in a situation where I need to MacGyver up a set of tools,” Fitzgerald said. ”A quart take-away container (with the lid) can be a great shaker. And after you're done shaking, if you crack the lid a little, you have a perfect strainer!”
Lighten Up for the Summer – Light, refreshing liquors are great this time of year, so save the scotch and bourbons for sweater weather. “My favorites to use are Gin, Rum, Rye Whiskey and Applejack,” he listed. “And they all blend really beautiful with iced-tea, which I find to be one of the best secret weapons of the summer cocktail.”
Summer’s the Season to Stir It Up – With fruit ripe for the picking, there’s no end to the delicious combinations you can create for a cocktail just by changing the fruit. In association with Lipton’s Summer “TASTES” Report, Fitzgerald developed a delectable mocktail you can create at home that is listed below. “Summer is my favorite season because you can feel the taste of warmer weather in everything you do — including, of course, food and drinks,” he said. “Some of the recipes we've been collaborating on do not require a huge amount of know-how, or tools to perfect which is another reason I love them.”

1 Bottle Lipton Diet Green Tea with Citrus
1 ¾ cupsWhite Grape Juice
¼ cup Orange Juice
1 Orange, sliced
