B. Scott Beauty: DIY Candy Cane Scrub

With the Christmas season behind us and as we start to take down all of our holiday decorations, I’m always looking for fun and creative ways to repurpose some of my festive items to use throughout the rest of the year.

If your household is like mine, you have gobs of candy canes that you probably end up throwing away. Not anymore! Here’s a simple DIY candy-cane scrub that I’m sure you’ll absolutely love!

Heres What You'll Need:

  • A glass jar with lid
  • 4 cups white sugar
  • Mixing bowl
  • 1/4 cup crushed candy canes
  • 1+ cup olive oil
  • 20-30 drops peppermint essential oil

  • Measure and pour the sugar into a mixing bowl.
  • Make sure the sugar isn’t clumpy!
  • The sugar will work as a gentle exfoliant to leave your feet and hands super smooth.
  • Add the olive oil to the sugar, and stir.

You want the mixture to resemble wet sand — not too saturated with the oil. Olive oil offers the best results, with wonderfully skin-soothing qualities, but feel free to experiment with sunflower or almond oil. If one cup of oil doesn't seem to be enough, then add another quarter cup. To finish the mixture, add the peppermint oil, which accentuates the delicious peppermint scent of the scrub. And peppermint is a natural anti-inflammatory, which soothes sore muscles.

Here comes the fun part:

Place a handful of candy canes in a ziplock plastic bag, and crush with the help of a rolling pin (or whatever you have in your possession that can break them down into superfine pieces. They should be about the same size as the white sugar once you’re finished.

I like to package the scrub by placing a large spoonful of the sugar-and-oil mixture at the base of the glass container, and then sprinkle with a layer of the crushed candy canes.

Fill up the jar by alternating the layers and voila! It should make about 3-4 jars, perfect for yourself or as a late holiday gift for someone else!
