Like all good things, Prohibition, and Boardwalk Empire, must come to an end.
After four award-winning seasons in 1920s Atlantic City, the HBO series is bowing out while it’s ahead—something main characters like Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), Chalky White (Michael Kenneth Williams), and Eli Thompson (Shea Wingham) fail to do time, and time, again. While its finale is an amicable one on the production side, the show itself forecasts plenty of vengeance, violence, frenzy, and “unquiet” falls.
If you remember back to season four, we saw the lovable Richard reach his demise; Chalky unravel after a shaky affair, and the accidental murder of his daughter; and the introduction of one of the show’s most-vile personalities to date, Dr. Valentin Narcisse (Jeffrey Wright). All the while, Nucky’s nephew narrowly escapes conviction for murdering a class mate, while his brother Eli is exiled after trying to cross him for the second time. All the while, Nucky tries to keep the cool, level head he’s known for as his empire crumbles before his eyes. How show creator Terence Winter hopes to tie up these loose ends in just eight more episodes is beyond our logic. But if this trailer is any indication, it. Will. Be. BIG!
Boardwalk Empire returns to HBO on Sunday, September 7.
