Betty Boop Bobs Onto the Silver Screen with Simon Cowell

She may be 84 years old, but Betty Boop is gearing up for a first: her own feature-length film.

The Roaring 20s icon is getting the silver screen treatment thanks to Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment. The American Idol producer’s company is teaming with animation and visual effects great Animal Logic and Fleischer Studios, owner of the Betty Boop character, to bring the flirtatious flapper’s story to theaters worldwide.

“Betty is an icon, and one of the biggest stars in the world. I’m thrilled to be working with her,” Cowell told Variety. “Betty, I’ve worked with some serious divas but I think you could be the biggest of them all!”

Betty Boop, whose original concept was inspired by 1920s pop singer Helen Kane, has starred in more than 100 cartoons, has 400-plus licensees worldwide, and even inked endorsement deals with the likes of Lancôme, Uniqlo, and Coca-Cola. It’s about time she took the top bill.

“I’ve been trying to get Betty to the dance for years now,” Animal Logic producer Jason Lust told Variety. “Can’t believe she’s finally said ‘Yes.’”

And who wouldn’t?! Animal Logic has helmed visual effects for award-winning projects like The Great GatsbyMoulin Rouge!, 300, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Couple that with Cowell’s success from reality competitions to One Direction, and you’re in for a boop-oop-a-doop-ing treat!
