College campuses across the country have gotten a bit more fashionable this fall. Her Campus, the #1 online community for college women, has been hosting a series of fashion shows as a part of its first ever College Fashion Week presented by U by Kotex and on Saturday, October 6th, it was time to go Blue with a show in Ann Arbor. Over 250 University of Michigan students shuffled into Necto Nightclub to see their peers rock the latest trends.
There were four distinct fashion categories showcased at the event: gym, class, weekend, and formal. These categories covered all of the major looks that college girls—or as Her Campus calls them, collegiettes—sport on a regular basis. But just how do they dress to impress at the University of Michigan? The girls tend to keep it casual for class and on weekends; they typically wear jeans or leggings tucked into boots with some sort of slouchy, long sweater or overcoat to brave the cold. Workout wear—which usually consists of neon sports bras, sorority t-shirts, bright sneakers, and black spandex—goes well beyond the gym. At formal events, most gals tend to embrace dresses that are short and tight, with some sort of edgy detail such as open-back cutouts. The styles at College Fashion Week accurately reflected the trends that University of Michigan students follow, which was evident from the crowd’s excitement
With song and dance performances throughout the night, a stocked candy bar, and goody bags for all, the event was deemed an overwhelming success. “It’s a way to bring the fashion centers of the world to Ann Arbor,” said Shira Moscawitz, a writer for the Her Campus chapter at UM. And for one night, it was the only runway that mattered. Maybe next year they’ll bring it to the Big House!
