Channeling My Inner Southern Belle: Part I

I can't exactly pinpoint what it was that made me want to live down South. Was it the lustful lyrics and melodious sounds of country music? Was it Reese Witherspoon and Josh Lucas in Sweet Home Alabama? Or was it Matthew McConaughey's soothing southern accent and rock-hard abs of steel? It's hard to say, but for whatever reason, I have always been eager to experience the charming, laid-back lifestyle often depicted in the southern states.

Luckily for me, I was recently granted the opportunity to escape the mayhem of Manhattan and jet-set to Georgia for a few days of Southern hospitality at its finest at the St. Regis Atlanta.

Located in the affluent town of Buckhead, the posh property is as exquisite as the magnificent shops, restaurants, and mansions that surround it. The St. Regis Atlanta depicts the classic beauty of the South with an avant-garde approach. Soothing shades of ivory and mineral green garnish the interior, and fancy fixtures, like an extravagant 700-pound glass chandelier found in the hotel's lobby, furnish the rooms. And the haute hotel's anthology of fine art and antiques is equally impressive.

A Peachy Appeal
After a painless plane ride and a short drive from the airport, I reached the luxurious location of 88 West Paces Ferry Road, the same affluent address where Cindy Crawford happened to be staying at the time, and that Jennifer Aniston had just left.

Immediately, I was treated like royalty by the attentive St. Regis staff that greeted and guided me to my substantial suite. With a five-fixture marble bathroom, plush king-size bed, and a beautiful balcony view of the city, my accommodations were anything but average. And when a butler arrived to deliver a signature Bloody Mary, I knew this weekend was going to be full of sweet (and spicy) surprises. With much of the afternoon to spare, I resisted my irresistible bed, and roamed about the regal resort.

My first stop: the 24-hour fitness facility which overlooks the 40,000-ft. Mediterranean-styled Pool Piazza. What was I doing indoors? That palatial pool was calling my name. I instantly pictured myself lounging in a cozy chaise sipping a cocktail and soaking up the southern sun amidst tropical plants and that incredible cascading waterfall. I imagined unwinding at sunset with a glass of wine at the poolside bar with only the subtle roar of the outdoor fireplace and a good book to keep me company. A few minutes on the treadmill would have to suffice… I needed to get down to that pool ASAP.

Tranquilizing Treatments and Tasty Treats
After a relaxing dip and a self-guided tour around the property, I headed to the resort's Remede Spa, where I received a decadent 60-minute massage. The aromatherapy blend and warm paraffin wax helped me achieve the ultimate state of serenity.

After a few hours at the sensational spa, I decided to further enhance my “Zen” with a spot of tea. Decorated with lavish seats and extravagant fixings, the Long Gallery, on the balcony level of the lobby, is the perfect place for hobnobbing. With an uppity clientele and plenty of unique flavors, the elegant teatery is the ideal setting for participating in the traditional pastime. Raise your pinky and take a sip. It doesn't get much better than this.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's post. I'll take you on a tour around my favorite spots in Atlanta.
