No one on the corner has swagger like her. That's probably why rapper M.I.A was inspired bycounterfeit goods for her 19-piece collection with Versus Versace.
“It’s always been part of the M.I.A. culture—to talk about bootlegs, and people that sell them or make them. When I was approached by Versace, it seemed like a good idea to take that and reverse the cycle,” M.I.A said. “Versace designs have always been bootlegged, now it’s Versace bootlegging the bootleg for the bootleggers to bootleg the bootleg. This is to keep the cycle going.”
Rapper M.I.A. let it slip backstage at Balenciaga’s Spring 2014 show in Paris last week that she had a little collaboration coming out in two weeks, and we assumed, correctly it seems, that she would be the next Versus designer!
Donatella Versace’s second line, Versus, has confirmed the news with a statement released today, “I love the energy of the street, so when M.I.A suggested we use bootleg Versace, I thought it was such an incredible idea,” Gianni’s sister said. “The collection is everything that I love about the new Versus Versace—it’s loud, fast, unafraid, and brings together the worlds of music and fashion. I can’t wait to see people wearing the collection.”
Her collection consists of t-shirts and printed jeans to silk shirts, jersey dresses, and military-inspired outerwear available October 16th.
