Gina Kohler is an executive cosmetic junkie who has helped shaped many of the brands that we know and love. After building up brands at Guthy-Renker, she stepped into fashion for a while at BeachMint, and helped the e-tailer expand its offering to include shoes, lingerie, and more. But Kohler finally found her calling by joining forces with Hil Davis to create BeautyKind, an online beauty retailer that not only offers the best prestige beauty buys, but also donates 5% of purchases to a worthy cause of the customer’s choice. Talk about beauty giving back!
Glam caught up with Kohler as she ran from meeting to meeting, prepared the site for New Year opportunities, ensured there was enough counter space for her beauty buys (and her husband!), and made sure their boys got their homework done.
Sneak in a workout, if possible. I grab them whenever I can, which is sometimes before work, at lunch, or after. Pilates, treadmill, or elliptical with weights is generally the rotation. It helps motivate me in all aspects of my life and keeps me from getting too stressed. #startuplifeisnoteasy
Take Jordan for a walk. She’s happy anywhere, but loves the Cali coastline! And, who am I kidding? So do I!
Shower time and BeautyKind. There’s no end to my crazy collection of amazing brands lining my Top Shelf: Gloss Moderne, Lea Journo, T3, Teadora, LaLicious, VenEffect, Verso, Doucce, High-Tech Cosmetics, Rouge Bunny Rouge, Christian Siriano Silhouette, Leilani Bishop. I love it, but my husband wants more counter space. I never leave the house without mascara, lip gloss, and fragrance. Not. Ever.
I head into the office. Considering I live in L.A., my five-minute commute makes me happy! Love the team and joint passion for making a difference with BeautyKind. I almost can forgo my morning coffee just feeding off the incredibly infectious energy in the office. Almost…
Most mornings I go on the site for a quick once-over, check our Google Analytics, review sales, read any comments that have come into customer care, and troubleshoot any issues.
Morning call with chief philanthropy officer, Krissy Barker. I never leave a conversation without learning about a new worthwhile cause that’s been added to the BeautyKind list.
I’m busy enjoying the perks of BeautyKind, testing out all the fragrances in our GMM Michael’s office. That means even making the boys line up for a spritz.
Brainstorm with marketing, email, and social teams to talk about integrated strategies to drive traffic to the site and spread the BeautyKind message. A mix of pressed green juices and peanut M&Ms help keep the creativity flowing. So fun to hear all the creative ideas!
Catch up with the team at SB Projects, our strategic partner for potential spokespeople and influencers. Big news to be revealed in the New Year!
Lunch! We order in and I usually opt for a salad. Our founder, Hil Davis, is a true Southern boy and so everyday I watch him lobby to order from fried chicken LA mainstay Dinah’s. He usually wins us over!
Weekly touch-base call with our PR agency, Full Picture. They fill us in on the latest media placements, future story ideas, and speaking opportunities, so we can spread the word about BeautyKind.
Michael and I jump on a call with a prospective brand. The presentation goes well—and they’ll be on board in early 2015. It’s a great one, so stay tuned!
Coffee or Diet Coke break. Need sustenance!
Team sync… a weekly call with our incredible SF-based tech team, led by co-founder Adil Wali, to review features and functionality that we’re adding to the site. It’s a whole new language I’m slowly getting used to.
Home with the family to have dinner together, and tonight my husband whipped up pasta with homemade sauce. There is always some homework or project to complete for the boys. Definitely still checking emails and looking at my schedule for tomorrow—the work day sometimes never ends. I can’t help but also sneak in a little “me” time, scanning my fave blogs and beauty reads like WWW, The Zoe Report, Byrdie, Gal meets Glam, and Glossible.
Glass of red wine and a show with the hubby… Homeland, Nashville, last season’s Mad Men, too many amazing choices right now… need more time to watch!
