Day in the Life: Poppy King, Founder of Lipstick Queen

Publish date:

Poppy King started her journey to lipstick bliss when she just 18 when she couldn't find the perfect formula for her favorite makeup must. The search spurred her on to create Lipstick Queen where she developed lush lipsticks in an array of colors and textures with many becoming cult classics, including Hello Sailor, Medieval, and more. As she explained, "For me, nothing is as glamorous or as empowering as lipstick. It doesn’t just brighten up my face, it fires up my confidence, making me feel like I can take on the world!" Glam caught up with the pout perfector as she jets around the city to keep up with a slew of meetings and works on her freshest formulas from the comfort of home:

7:00 a.m.

My day starts with a shower, coffee, and meditation. All three kick start me into action and get me ready for the day. Meditation in particular is extremely powerful for helping me feel balanced and focused on what I need to do that day. After that I sit down at my computer to address any urgent emails that will have come in overnight from our international markets.

8:30 a.m.

A little breakfast or cereal and almond milk and then I get dressed. My wardrobe is a bit like a fun park and getting dressed is a really enjoyable part of the day. I’m obsessed with glamour and I love everything associated with it – bags, shoes…and lipstick of course!

9:30 a.m.

My days are typically made up of three things: product, press, and people. The product element is where I work on dreaming up new concepts/ranges. I deal with vendors, I feedback on submissions, I research new products and write briefs for our suppliers. For the press side of my day, I do email and telephone interviews, I meet with editors, and I present new products. Finally, the people side of my day involves meetings and I regularly meet with the Lipstick Queen team or my designer James who is an extremely talented illustrator. He creates all the wonderful imagery you find on Lipstick Queen packaging and we have worked together since the very beginning of Lipstick Queen.

1:00 p.m.

Although I work from home, I often take meetings at a local café – one of my favorites at the moment is El Ray where they do a fantastic kale salad.

2:00 p.m.

Back home to answer emails and continue working on my latest projects. At the moment I am developing a new range of colors, based on a concept I first came up with nearly 25 years ago. When it comes to my career, I’m definitely more of a long distance runner than a sprinter and sometimes formulas and concepts can take years to perfect. With a new range, I line up the colors from deep to light, to see the progression of color, trying each one on. I then phone conference with the lab to go over the adjustments that need to be made.

Bikram yoga class with my wonderful friend Tricia Donegan on the Lower East side.

8:30 p.m.

Dinner out with friends, most likely somewhere in my neighborhood, the Lower East Side which I love because it is so culturally diverse.
