Exclusive Q&A: Kim Cattrall Talks Anti-Aging And Olay
As PR powerhouse Samantha Jones on the hit series Sex & The City, Kim Cattrall portrayed an image of a gorgeous man-eating Manhattanite that had everything under control, from her career to her love life to her look. In real life she still keeps it all together, and that now includes paying closer attention to her skincare regimen. Perhaps that's why she signed on to the be face of the Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Collection? We recently chatted with Cattrall about the partnership, the importance of sunscreen, and her biggest skincare concerns. Read the interview below.
So you’re the face of Olay… how does it feel?
Well first of all I love the products! I’ve been scrubbing my skin for a long time, but most of the scrubs I’ve used have been a little drying on my skin. The thing I love the most about this collection is the body lotion because I always need more moisturizer after I scrub. I have those mitts to scrub from top to bottom every morning; I don’t miss a day—it’s like brushing my teeth. I started using them about 3 or 4 years ago because I started to notice that I really, really needed to exfoliate, and I immediately saw that my skin was starting to feel healthier and fresher. Then when Olay asked me to do this, I was like, 'Yeah! First of all, send me the products because I like to endorse things that I can use and are terrific products.' These are terrific, and now they're part of my shower. Plus they're really moisturizing and so well priced. I even gave them as stocking stuffers to my girlfriends last Christmas.
What’s more important to you—having a youthful face or a youthful body?
Both! I think most people would say the face because that what you see in your day-to-day life, but I think it’s all important. I have British skin which is very sensitive and reactionary, so if the skin on my body is not feeling good, I start to scratch. I’m not comfortable. Skin is a very sensitive organ, and people sort of take it for granted and abuse it. They take more care of their internal organs sometimes than they do their external. For me, it’s not just about looking great, but also feeling good.
What are some of your personal skincare concerns?
Well, I’m at an age where I kind of have to stay out of sun and use protection. But for me it’s mostly about moisturizing, I tend to get dry. I travel a lot, so when I’m on a plane or I’m running around doing interviews all day, I need to hydrate.
How often do you use sunscreen?
Every day. If it’s the winter, I don’t use it on my body since it’s clothed, but I do use it on a hand cream. And of course, always on my face. It’s in my moisturizer and usually in my makeup, but I add to that as well. That’s this whole misconception about protection—it does wear out throughout the day. You have to re-apply it. The idea of if you're wearing SPF 60 it’s gonna last the whole day, it’s just not true. Maybe it’s more like 60 minutes!
What do you think is the most important component of skincare from head to toe?
I think it’s maintaining, nurturing, and caring for it. You’re not just doing it for your skin, you’re doing it for yourself. If your skin doesn’t look good, I think people don’t think you look healthy, and you want to radiate health and confidence!
