Just as nature goes through its cycles of change, so do we. We are as much a part of the seasons as the leaves that fall from the trees during autumn, the white snowflake crystals that magically fall from the sky in the winter, the rebirth of the early grasses and trees in the spring and the fire of the sun on a bright summer’s day. We are part of nature’s cycles and the elements. In feng shui, the Five Elements are earth, metal, water, wood and fire. These elements are symbolic of the forces at work within the universe and how these forces impact our minds and bodies, as well as the seasons.
1. Add passion and excitement to your life by infusing the colors of autumn, such as red, yellow and burgundy into your wardrobe. These colors have a stimulating Chi (energy vibration). When wearing these colors, you are sure to be remembered!
2. Place a water feature, such as a fountain or a miniature waterfall, in the southwest corner of your office and watch greater abundance enter your life. Remember to always keep the water and fountain clean. The sound of the water is calming, reminding us of our connection to nature.
3. As the season changes it is important to change your energy which is called chi in feng shui. Technology makes it easy to be plugged in wherever we go, so visit a public library, park or café. Head out to your favorite locations to improve your chi, ignite clarity of thought, boost your creativity and elevate your mood.
4. Autumn is a great time for a party. The best way to achieve an uncluttered, clean and organized space is to plan a dinner party. With the party date in mind cleaning up can be a fun and effective project with anticipation of the upcoming event.
5. Aromatherapy is so pleasurable and healing. There are a wide variety of affordable incense and scented candles available to us. Choose the scent of flowers, fresh rain or ocean air -- all are essential to our well being because they connect us to the natural world.
6. We spend about 99% of our time inside so it is easy to forget our connection to the outdoor world. Still, some of the happiest moments of our lives are spent outdoors. Bring nature’s elements into indoor spaces with pines cones, fresh flowers, stones or crystals.
7. Turn on the oven to fight off an early autumn chill. Nothing reminds us of good times like the smell of chocolate chip cookies in the oven. Try a variety of ingredients like vanilla or cinnamon and experiment with baking an old family recipe.
8. If you don’t already have a pet think about adopting one as you prepare to spend more time indoors. Studies show that having a pet can lower your blood pressure and ward off depression. A well cared for pet adds life force into your home which makes for good feng shui. Other added benefits are unconditional love, smiles, laughter and cuddles too!
9. The Red Bird is an ancient feng shui principal that teaches us that “what you see is what you get.” The walls you face and the things you spend your day looking at is your Red Bird. These areas are where your future is depicted. One location that is often overlooked when considering a Red Bird is the wallpaper on your computer. Carefully select a photo or design that symbolizes the things that you want to attract to your life.
10. Eat local, seasonal produce. Late summer brings us beautiful fruits and vegetables forecasting the season to come with the rich colors of yellow, orange, red and green. The more colorful your plate the healthier you are eating.
