Giada De Laurentiis Shares Her Summer Essentials
Lighter locks are synonymous with the summer, but there’s a divide on how bold celebrities will go. While a slew of stars have tried technicolor tresses, top chef Giada De Laurentiis prefers subtler strands when she wants to lighten up. The Food Network star and Clairol Natural Instincts ambassador took some time out of her busy schedule–namely building up her latest Las Vegas hotspot–to chat with Glam about her summer hair hues, beach blanket beauty musts, as well as her recipe for the perfect summer spread.
On Switching Shades for the Season:
“The great thing about Natural Instincts is that the color will wash out after 28 [shampoos], so it allows you to play with different colors without feeling like it’s permanent until you find the shade that you love. I like to get lighter in the summer and darker in the winter. I think it’s fun and empowers a woman to reinvent herself–and that’s part of the fun and uniqueness for being a woman.”
On the Best Ingredients for Healthy Skin and Hair:
“What you put in your body is just as important as what you put on your body. I like to eat cleanly and with simple ingredients, so olive oil is something I use a lot of. I mix olive oil and salt to [make] salad dressings [and I add it] to pretty much everything. I also use it to moisturize my fingertips and, at times, the tips of my hair. Coconut oil is pretty phenomenal for that as well, and also it’s in Natural Instincts hair color.”
On Her Summer Style and Beauty Staples:
“I’ve been wearing a lot of Cushnie et Ochs. They have pretty amazing dresses that I’ve really been loving. They are chic and stylish but yet really funky and young at the same time. They make you feel powerful and look your best. It hugs you in just all the right places.
I always have sunscreen in my bag at all times. My brother died 10 years ago of melanoma, so it’s the top of mind all the time for myself, my daughter, my husband, and my whole family. I also love a little Evian mister because my skin tends to dry from the sun and the heat. And I’ve always got some version of a red lipstick—right now it’s sort of a coral color. Reds are great because they bring attention to my lips and not so much to my eyes, in case I’ve had a long week or I feel tired. Lastly, I always wear a little bit of foundation with sunscreen in it just because it’ll even out my skin and give it a nice healthy glow. “
On her Beach Bag Must-Haves:
“I like to read books that my daughter might enjoy with me, so I authored a children’s book series and my last one just came out today, Recipe for Adventure: New Orleans. It’s fun to bring a book that the two of us can enjoy together. I also always pack sunscreen, a hat to protect myself, my Evian mister, and a lipstick to keep my lips looking good, I want to look good no matter where I am. I also pack a nice beach towel and some rubber bands to keep my hair up and out of the way.
In terms of snacks, I bring flavored popcorns because my daughter and my husband really like that. I sometimes try citrus popcorn or a spicy one or a Parmesan cheese popcorn and my trail mix of dried fruit, nuts, and dark chocolate chips. I bring tons of water because you got to stay hydrated. Popcorn and trail mix I think are the two things that I always have on hand that can last through the beach weather.”
On the Best Dishes to Serve at a Summer Soiree:
“Now that tomatoes are in and fresh herbs are aplenty, I love to make beautiful caprese salads. Don’t do a lot to them, just dress them up on a plate. One of my favorite deserts to do in the summer time is fresh watermelon with a little bit of lemon and a little bit of honey drizzled on top.”
