Let the games begin.
Six months before its national bow, we have an exclusive first look at The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1, straight from The Capitol... and President Coin. Academy Award-nominated Julianne Moore joins the four part franchise in its third installment as the salt-and-pepper haired, District 13 head honcho, a role she wanted after reading the original trilogy.
“I’ve read all the books. I’ve read them all the way through, and I’m like ‘I want to be in this movie,’” she said in a Hunger Games exclusive. “Clearly, that was the only part I could play.”
Though author Suzanne Collins’ dystopian tales offer little about President Coin, (“Coin is very sparingly drawn. You don’t know who she is, but she is only spoken about from Katniss’ point of view,” Moore says), there are points in Mockingjay that will bring her to life in a way unseen by the written word alone.
“There’s a very interesting scene where The Capitol bombs District 13 and Coin, rather than retaliating, opts to do nothing. And I think that sort of speaks volumes about who she is as a leader,” Moore adds. “She’s not about to risk revealing herself and her population in a fight, when she knows that they’re better served by lying low and letting it blow over.”
Moore joins Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, who director Francis Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobson say “finished the majority of his work” and will not be recreated with CGI though “shooting those scenes without him has been painful.”
Mockingjay — Part 1 will land in theaters on November 21, 2014. Until then, fans can keep up with first looks, behind-the-scenes stills, and interactive first looks at TheHungerGamesExclusive.com.
