How to Layer for Summers Tricky Temps

Tank // Tank // Necklace // Shorts // Sandals // Sunglasses

Summer is tricky, especially where I live. One second, it's hotter than the surface of the sun, the next it's freezing (slash – 62 degrees–LA’s version of freezing). This makes getting dressed a bit of a challenge.

Even if your summers aren’t as extreme as mine, a look without layers is a look that is, well, kind of boring. Don’t let the warm weather be a deterrent because it is possible to rock layers in the summer and I’ll show you a few ways to do it.

Layer Tanks and Tees

The '90s teenage girl in me loves this layering technique. Layer two tanks or a tank in a tee for added layer of depth and interest to your look. Make sure to use tissue-weight tees so you don’t get too hot.

Open Knits

The summer months don’t exactly scream sweater weather but there are some sweaters that are actually designed for summer. Try an open knit or something crocheted to keep you warm when the temperatures take an unexpected dip. They also work incredibly well for sudden blasts of AC (that artificial air is extra cold). Just make sure you are wearing something stylish underneath.

A Light or Short Sleeved Jacket

Never underestimate the power of a light jacket or, if you can find one, a short sleeved jacket. I actually just found a short sleeved 3.1 Phillip Lim motorcycle jacket at Nordstrom Rack and it’s going to get a lot of play this summer. Short sleeved jackets not your jam? Try a vest instead.

If All Else Fails …

If you are just too darn hot for layered tees, sweaters, and jackets – then layer your accessories instead. This is the coolest (literally) way to enjoy layered without sweating up a storm. Long beaded or chain necklaces are always fun to layer. You can also go super-bohemian with layered bracelets and/or rings.

How will you wear layers this summer?
