“I want to get started on some other categories—menswear, maybe accessories,” he told Glam about his post-Incubator plans, which include moving into a Garment District design space, and inching closer to his runway debut. “I just really love the idea of being able to wear the clothes myself, and so many of my guy friends say ‘Please make us something to wear!’ And that’s how my womenswear started, so it feels natural.”
If his latest collection is any indication, Simkhai's menswear range will be just as aggressive, solid, and bold. After all, he borrowed from the boys for his fall/winter femme.
“I came across this cigar box that was covered in crocodile and it felt so sexy to me,” said Simkhai. “I had this vision of a very powerful man smoking cigars, and I wanted to give women that power. I was a little bit intrigued by a dangerous woman. I wanted to mix that menswear reference and a little bit of a dangerous woman with classic, sporty, Simkhai.”
There is one thing that won’t be universal across the expanding Simkhai brand, though.
“I took a risk with a lot of different, exotic skins, playing with different lengths [for fall]... and showing a little underboob.”
