Kimberly Ovitz Steps Away from the Fall Sales Rack

Kimberly Ovitz has opted not to ship her Fall 2013 collection in order to focus on her burgeoning jewelry line. “We are in the process of exploring new opportunities for the label and will not be fulfilling orders for the fall line at this time,” Ovitz said in a statement to Women’s Wear Daily. “We will be working on a number of collaborations and initiatives, including a new collection with Shapeways, which we hope to roll out soon.”

Ovitz began a partnership with Shapeways, a 3-D printing marketplace, on a collection of contemporary jewelry that included a collar, ear cuffs, and rings that connected to bracelets. The use of the new technology was prominent in her most recent collection, and in a recent interview, Ovitz dubbed the new form of manufacturing the way of tomorrow. “It’s revolutionizing the immediacy of fashion,” she said. “I want to infuse technology into what I do. It’s the future.”

While she sets to work on expanding her jewelry line, sources for the trade magazine noted that Ovitz plans to tackle a handbag collection and even a possible makeup line during her season-long sabbatical. With her eye on the future and her natural downtown edge, the results are sure to put her light-years ahead.
