Louis Vuitton Celebrates 160 Years with Six Iconoclasts
Louis Vuitton’s famous brown and gold monogramed bags are getting a facelift. Karl Lagerfeld, Frank Gehry, Cindy Sherman, Rei Kawakubo, Christian Louboutin and Marc Newson will create bags and luggage for LVMH’s crown jewel.
The collaboration marks the 160th anniversary for the French fashion house. Vuitton tapped the six iconoclasts to create limited-edition items that will arrive in stores in mid-October, Women’s Wear Daily is reporting. The collection will retail for $2,725 to $5,450. Lagerfeld and Sherman also created trunks for the occasion.
“We have assembled an amazing group of talents—geniuses, I would say. Each one is among the best in his or her field,” Vuitton vice president DelphineArnault said. “The monogram is at the center of our house, so we celebrate the monogram every day. But we thought this project was really special because the personalities we chose are fascinating and diverse.”
“This is a very interesting territory—to have collaborations with the exceptional, creative minds,” Arnault continued. “It’s a really fun project. It’s done with a lot of humor.”
An interesting initiative, if we might add, considering that while Marc Jacobs was at the helm, the brand saw collaborations with Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, and Yayoi Kusama.
The limited-edition collaboration will be accompanied by an ad campaign, dedicated website, commemorative book and launch event in New York City on November 7th.
