The Ugly Christmas Sweater was the bane of many growing up, but it’s found its footing as an unlikely homage to this special time of the year. While you can DIY a sweater of your own or even rent one for your next festive fête, we’ve opted for a fun alternative: our nails. We turned to MARS the Salon’s owner Hiroko Fujikawa to get the detail on nailing this look:
Beginning with a base coat, apply a pale beige nail color to all of the nails. Next, draw a thick brown line on the bottom of the thumb and gray lines on the tip of the ring and index finger as well as near the cuticle of the pinky finger. Give the thumb a thin green stripe above the big brown line.
Draw a gray flower with a thin striping brush above the green the line before adding X’s to each corner of the flower. After that, paint a thin navy line above the flower; then add white dots to the green and navy lines with a tiny dotter or a toothpick.
Next, paint a thin green line on the index and ring finger. Then, draw the body of the reindeer on both nails with brown nail polish and a thin striping brush.
Just don’t forget the legs or antlers! Add a few dots and X’s around the reindeer in brown.
Add a thin dark green line above the reindeer before adding a few white dots to the line. Create a thick navy line across the center of the middle finger.
Add a thin, dark green line above the reindeer before adding a few white dots to the line. Create a thick navy line across the center of the middle finger.
For the pinky, draw two lines, one thick, one thin, at the tip of the nail. Then add a red zigzag line between the gray and navy polish, adding in a few red dots above and below the zigzag. Top off all nails with a clear top and, voila, instant holiday cheer!
