Meryl Streep To Transform Into Opera Legend Maria Callas

As far as crazy acting transformations go, Meryl Streep takes the cake. Having captured our hearts with her interpretation of roles like Julia Child,Margaret Thatcher and a demanding editor-in-chief rumored to have been inspired by Anna Wintour, Streep is now prepared to take on the role of iconic opera singer Maria Callas in an HBO film adaptation of Terrence McNally’s play Master Class.

Tony Award-winning Master Class depicts Maria Callas’ meditations on her life and career, and has starred big names like Patti LuPone and Tyne Daly. Mike Nichols, who has collaborated with Streep many times in the past, is set to direct the film. Page Six reports that filming is set to begin in January, after Streep has completed her role in Ricky and the Flash, in which she will portray a rockstar declining in fame and estranged from her children.

We already know she can play a devil who wears Prada, but we look forward to see how Streep proves, once again, that there is no role she cannot tackle—especially when the character is said to be a total diva.
