You may not recognize the name Mindy Kaling. That's alright for now, but after reading this book, you'll wonder why she's not more famous. And that's understandable because she wonders that too...
The Office co-writer's new book, cleverly titled Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns), is an in-depth look into Kaling's strange and wonderful world. The chapters are not traditional -- for the most part, the book is composed of both fun and scarring anecdotes of Kaling's journey to fame with short lists that puncture the narrative in hilariously random ways. Sections of her life are divided by funny titles like "I Love You New York And It Likes Me Okay." Kaling also lists her goal level of fame, her favorite comedy moments and, of course, instructions for her funeral.
In another act of pure brilliance, Kaling addresses the comparisons of her book to Tina Fey's Bossypants which was released earlier this year. She says straight off the bat that her book won't be as good because she cannot trade bodies with Tina in a much more hilarious version of Freaky Friday. By providing that detailed of an answer, we assume she's probably tried.
But Kaling doesn't need to be Tina Fey. Sure Fey, Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig are rockstars, but Kaling is the new face of comedy. And we can't wait for her to reach the exact level of fame she craves- fame that includes not waiting in line for brunch, getting to watch the Los Angeles Lakers anytime she wants, and having Kenan Thompson play her on SNL.We're not so sure about that last one but then again, neither is she.
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) is out now.
