Naomi Campbell Takes on an Empire State of Mind
Naomi Campbellhas proven to be just as riveting on-screen as she is on the runway, thanks to Oxygen’s reality modeling competition The Face. After years of appearing as herself in television shows, though, her role on the small screen is about to get bigger.
Campbell landed a recurring gig on Fox’s upcoming drama Empire, starring Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson. The show will follow Howard as music mogul Lucious Lyons, whose plans to choose a successor at Empire Entertainment are thwarted when his wife (Henson) is released from prison. Campbell will play the cunning Camilla, a cougar who is courting one of Howard’s three sons in hopes of duplicitously staking her claim in the family business.
The series comes from Lee Daniels, known for his affinity for high drama as evidenced by 2001’s Monster’s Ball and recent work like Precious and The Paperboy. For Campbell, working with her longtime friend in his element is a dream come true.
“It’s an honor to follow in the footsteps of actresses like Halle Berry, Oprah, GaboureySidibe, and Mo'Nique, and work with Lee Daniels,” Campbell told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m looking forward to joining Lee and this amazing cast on set.”
Daniels insists the feeling is mutual—and that Campbell can stand up to the task. “Naomi is a beautiful actress—underrated in my mind,” he added. “She will be wonderful as Camilla. I am truly thrilled to have one of my close friends join us.”
Question: can we sit with them?
See Campbell’s character debut unfold when Empire airs early next year. We’re certain she has the sass part down.
