#NYFW Fall 2012: Bold and Beautiful at Monique Lhuillier

Monique Lhuillier’s glamorous gowns have always caught our eye but so have her beauty looks. We popped backstage before her Fall 2012 show Saturday night to get the scoop on how to capture that magical old Hollywood look.

We first chatted with head stylist for Kérastase Paris, Odile Gilbert for a how-to on getting those Veronica Lake waves. “We did a very glossy, voluminous style. We did it in a flat wave,” she said.

She prepped the hair with Kérastase’s upcoming Control Fiber Architect to repair split ends and add shine. She then used Double Force Hair Spray before creating a side part and drying the hair back away from the face. The then sprayed the length of the hair with the Double Force Control Ultime Spray and curling the hair in similar one-inch section to create an even wave. She polished off the style with another spritz of the Double Force Hairspray to seal everything in.

We then moved on to makeup with MAC’s Val Garland who the inspiration behind the look. “It was very early nineties, like Angela Lindvall on a Belgian catwalk,” she said.

She started with dewy skin by mixing Full Coverage Foundation with moisturizer and setting it with Prep & Prime Loose Powder and contoured to create very high cheekbones. She kept the shimmer going with an accentuating sculpting cream too lighten the lid with a shimmering nude pressed pigment on top. She skipped the mascara to focus on grooming the brows.

The pièce de résistance was of course the bold red lip, but it wasn’t slick like the rest of the face. “The clothing is very reflective. There are lots of reds and blacks, so with the lip I decided to make it very matte,” she said. “We have lots of shine on the skin so that works to juxtapose together the shine with the matte.”

To get the look she used MAC’s Lip Pencil in Cherry and filled the lips in completely. She then added a layer of Lipstick in Lady Danger and set it with Powder Blush in Devil. This hair and makeup combo will certainly make for a devilishly fun night out!
