It was a surprise that would make Beyoncé proud.
In a midnight move mimicking the iTunes drop of her fifth album, award-winning designer—and purveyor of this sweatshirt, currently making A-list rounds—Alexander Wang revealed that he’s joined forces with H&M.
Wang made the announcement at H&M’s Coachella party on Saturday night, later sharing the news as his first Instagram post with more than 148,000 followers. In the clip, we see a series of stadium lights turn on, unveiling a countdown clock with November 6 as the date of his Wang x H&M drop. If the video is any indication, the collaboration will take on the sporty chic aesthetic that the Balenciaga creative director has infused into both his namesake and diffusion T by Alexander Wang lines. And, as his popularity from the masthead to the masses prove, the capsule collection will likely sell out fast.
“Alexander Wang is one of the most important voices in fashion today,” said H&M creative advisor Margareta van den Bosch in a statement. “He understands exactly what people want to wear and does it with an energy and passion that’s infectious.”
A spirit that Wang hopes will go beyond what most think when it comes to H&M.
“They are very open to push boundaries and to set a platform for creativity,” he said of his new, fast fashion partnership. He later told Women’s Wear Daily “It's a different era and a different world today and I think everything is changing, the whole system of fashion and design, and I think there’s an opportunity for everyone to create and do something that is different and individual.”
Wang will be the first American designer to collaborate with H&M, putting him in the company of Versace, Maison Martin Margiela, and more recently, Isabel Marant. Since the fast fashion retailer introduced designer collabs in 2004 with Karl Lagerfeld, its higher-end merchandise has proven that people are willing to spend more on fewer H&M pieces if there is a high fashion name attached. Yes, you can count us in that number.
Alexander Wang x H&M will be made available in 250 H&M stores on November 6, with accessories and apparel for men and women. Save the date!
