Stefano Tonchi is stepping aside to allow Sofia Coppola to guest edit a special edition of W magazine.
“As a kid, I loved magazines. That’s where I got a lot of my interest in photography and fashion,” the director told Women’s Wear Daily. “I remember as a kid W being so glamorous and it being so different from my reality.”
“Sofia came to the office a lot,” Tonchi said of Coppola. “I gave her my desk a few times. She really pursued some of the stories. Some happened, some didn’t.”
What did work was Coppola’s cover story with Kirsten Dunst, shot by Juergen Teller, a Q&A with Marisa Berenson, a story with Cornelia Guest, and a piece by Paul Fortune on his design process for Marc Jacob’s media room.
“I’m going back to my film career after doing this,” she said. “I never realized how much work goes into a magazine. It’s kind of similar to doing a movie. I’m surprised how they do it every month.”
We can read this month’s issue of W when it hits newsstands on April 21st.
