The Pirelli Calendar Covers Up for 2013 in the Name of Charity

Though it's most well known for nude poses, the Pirelli calendar is taking a much different turn for 2013. While in previous years, photographers including Mario Sorrenti and Karl Lagerfeld have snapped models such as Miranda Kerr and Kate Moss in their birthday suits, this year's calendar is covered up.

Steve McCurry shot the 2013 calendar in Rio de Janeiro, capturing the magic of the country alongside the beauty of 11 actresses and models including Isabeli Fontana, Adriana Lima, Sonia Braga, Marisa Monte, Elisa Sednaoui, Petra Nemcova, Hanaa Ben Abdesslem, Liya Kebede, Karlie Kloss, Kyleigh Kuhn and Summer Rayne Oakes.

During two weeks, McCurry brought his muses around the streets of Rio, accenting human emotion with natural landscapes. “I tried to portray Brazil, its landscape, its economy and its culture, along with the human element” said McCurry. “This was the story I wanted to tell through my lens. For me photography is an important expressive means to tell large and small stories of daily life.”

Instead of heading down the same route as previous Pirelli calendars, McCurry snapped the models while clothed, as the entire 2013 collaboration is all about focusing on the women's' own personal charities. “This is about their charities, and so I wasn’t photographing them naked. It’s not about their bodies. Or their sexuality. You can do sexy shots anywhere, including the lobby of a hotel. For what I was trying to do I needed setting, background, a sense of atmosphere. I was creating a scene – a foreground, a background, a sense of place.”

When it comes to the Pirelli stars of 2013, their focuses are as vast as their hometowns. While Lima supports Bill Clinton’s global initiative program in Haiti, Kebede splits her time between the Liya Kebede Foundation, the Mother’s Day every Day campaign, and previously as a goodwill Ambassador for the World Health Organization. But one thing's for sure. The magic of the much anticipated calendar is only adding to the passion and dedication these women feel when it comes to their philanthropic efforts.
