Saint Laurent might be the “unofficial” Yves Saint Laurent biopic, but we have to say it looks pretty darn good. Saint Laurent’s business partner and lover, Pierre Bergé, only approved of the first film about the designer’s life, dubbed Yves Saint Laurent, but this second upcoming film surely has promise. Aside from the fact that Saint Laurent is in French and we can’t understand a word of it because there are no subtitles, the tension and drama is evident in the trailer that was released Tuesday.
Don’t expect to see the designer’s archives in this one (Bergé only authorized access for Yves Saint Laurent), but do prepare yourself for a star-studded cast and a close-up look at his lifelong battle with substance abuse. Gaspard Ulliel plays Saint Laurent, Lea Seydoux plays muse Loulou de la Falaise, model Aymeline Valade plays model Betty Catroux, Jérémie Renier plays Berge and Louis Garrel plays Jacques de Bascher. We’re not entirely sure we’ll be able to follow this film in its entirety because of the whole French thing, but we did catch a few things from the trailer: the very dramatic statement, “Je t'aime Jacques,” several utterings of the designers name in impeccable French accents, snakes and the song “I Put A Spell On You.” Needless to say, we are intrigued.
